Tottenham confirm Lucas Bergvall decision as statement made

Lucas Bergvall has signed a new Tottenham contract until 2031, it has been confirmed. The new deal adds two years onto his current stay in north London.

He has played 45 times in all competitions, starting 24.

Having agreed to move to Spurs in February, Bergvall's position in Ange Postecoglou's squad has shifted rapidly to becoming a key player. His new deal is a reflection of that and now commits him to the club for more than six years.

In January 2024 he made his senior international debut and has played four times in total. Speaking in a video to promote his new deal, Bergvall said: "Last year I chose to come here. This year I choose to stay here. Come on you Spurs."

Bergvall has been one of the few bright sparks in an otherwise disastrous season for Tottenham. They sit 16th in the Premier League after 34 games and are just one point above West Ham.

Postecoglou's focus has remained on the Europa League as a possible backdoor entry into the Champions League., played at the home of Athletic Club in Bilbao.

Pape Matar Sarr and Dejan Kulusevski came on at half-time but Bergvall completed the game with James Maddison instead being hooked.

Bergvall has also been asked to play in defence with Gray. Both youngsters have operated out of position due to a plague of injuries and have shown flashes of their talent.

Coming in at just 18, Bergvall was initially a fringe player in the Premier League for Postecoglou but came to his own over the winter period. Forced to play in a number of roles, he has hardly been out of the team since.

Bergvall's only goal came in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at home against Liverpool. He has been an ever present in the Europa League, assisting three so far.

Mostly, though, it's been about Bergvall's industry in the centre of the park, his willingness to take the ball and get it moving up the pitch.

"Either through spins, dribbles or passes and there's a little bit of the Mousa Dembele way about how he pirouettes out of trouble sometimes. He's only going to get better as well."
