New Delhi, August 19, 2025 – When it comes to financial health, Delhi has emerged as the most credit-responsible city in India. According to Paisabazaar’s latest Credit Premier League (CPL) Insights Report: “How India Checked Credit Score”, Delhi secured the number one position with an impressive average credit score of 746, leaving other major cities like Pune, Kerala, and Chandigarh slightly behind.

Delhi Leads the Pack with the Highest Average Score

The report highlights that 46% of Delhi’s consumers fall into the ‘credit-healthy’ category, the highest in the country. With an average score of 746, the national capital outperformed all other cities.

Pune secured the second spot, where 44% of participants achieved an average score of 744. Kerala followed closely at number three with an average score of 745, while Chandigarh ranked fourth with an average of 744 and 43% of its consumers qualifying as credit-healthy.

47 Lakh Participants, 710 Cities Covered

The findings are based on Paisabazaar’s Credit Premier League (CPL), a month-long digital initiative aimed at spreading credit awareness across India. Over 4.7 million participants from 710 cities took part in this campaign, tracking their credit scores and learning about the importance of maintaining a strong financial record.

Among the highlights, five participants from Bengaluru, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kerala, and Pune achieved the highest recorded score of 861 out of 900. Another participant from Chennai closely followed with a score of 859, the second-highest in the study.

Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Lucknow Most Active

While Delhi emerged as the leader in average scores, other cities stood out for their active participation. The report notes that Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Lucknow collectively contributed more than 1.5 million participants, making them the most engaged cities in the competition.

Interestingly, more than 50% of the participants belonged to the 29–44 age group, reflecting the growing financial awareness among young working professionals. Women contributed around 8% participation, with a significant share coming from South Indian metros such as Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru.

Paisabazaar’s Mission: Building Credit Awareness

Commenting on the report, Santosh Agarwal, CEO of Paisabazaar, said,

“Our aim is to take credit awareness to every corner of India. Through the CPL initiative, consumers not only checked their credit scores but also took meaningful steps toward understanding and improving them. We will continue to make this experience even more engaging in the future.”

Why Credit Score Matters

For the uninitiated, a credit score is a three-digit number ranging between 300 and 900 that reflects an individual’s creditworthiness. It is calculated based on a person’s credit history, including timely loan repayments, credit card bill payments, and default records.

A score above 750 is generally considered excellent, making it easier for consumers to access loans and credit cards with lower interest rates and better financial terms. On the other hand, a lower score indicates higher risk, often resulting in loan rejections or higher borrowing costs.

Key Takeaways from the Study
  • Delhi leads with an average score of 746 and 46% credit-healthy consumers.

  • Pune, Kerala, and Chandigarh follow closely with average scores in the mid-740s.

  • 47 lakh participants from 710 cities joined the initiative, showcasing India’s growing interest in credit health.

  • Top scorers achieved 861 out of 900, from cities like Bengaluru and Lucknow.

Conclusion

The study reveals a clear shift in financial behavior across India, where awareness about maintaining a healthy credit score is on the rise. With Delhi setting the benchmark, other cities are not far behind, proving that urban India is steadily moving toward better financial discipline and responsible credit usage.

As access to loans, credit cards, and financial products becomes easier, credit score literacy will play a crucial role in shaping the country’s financial future.
