Amid growing tension between India and Pakistan, former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu put out a post on X, reminding everyone, “An eye for an eye makes the world blind..(with three folded hands emojis).”
This famous quote was coined by Mahatma Gandhi, who was a firm proponent of non-violence throughout his life.

Rayudu’s appeal, however, didn’t sit well with the Indian masses, who trolled him on social media left, right, and centre, with some even calling him a ‘traitor’.
I used to have a bit of sympathy for you, considering how you didn't get the chances you deserved, but today you’ve made sure that it's gone. Happy that you were dropped and now, I have a whole new opinion of you:

“An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind,” you say. But tell me—what will you do when someone gouges out both your eyes? And then comes for your wife’s, your mother’s, your father’s, and your children’s eyes?
Will you still sit back and post feel-good…

“Will you still sit back and post feel-good nonsense like this? Or will you finally wake up? This is exactly what we've been enduring since 1947—when Pakistan first bared its fangs. Pulwama, Pahalgam, Uri, Pathankot, Reasi… how many attacks will it take for you to stop preaching passivity? Not this time. Not anymore,” the person added.
The other option here is losing both our eyes. Only you can support it so that you can't see someone else going to the world cup instead of you.

Following the backlash, Rayudu tried to do damage control by praying for the safety of people in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and other border states of India, which have witnessed incessant cross-border firings from across the border from an agitated Pakistani army.
Prayers for peace and safety in Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab and other parts of India along the border. Hoping for strength, security and swift resolution for everyone affected. Jai Hind!

In another post, Rayudu explained what he meant when he used Gandhi’s quote. He stressed that it shouldn’t be viewed as a sign of weakness but as a reminder of wisdom. He emphasised that while justice needed to be delivered, one shouldn’t lose sight of humanity.
“An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.”

Let’s remember — this isn’t a call for weakness, but a reminder of wisdom.
Justice must stand firm, but never lose sight of humanity.
We can love our nation fiercely and still hold compassion in our hearts.
Patriotism and peace can…

In moments like these, we stand united not in fear, but in resolve. I feel immense gratitude to our Indian Army who are the real heroes who carry the weight of a nation with unmatched courage, discipline, and selflessness🙏🏻

Jai Hind,” he added.

However, Indian people weren’t convinced by his words. People stood entirely behind the Indian armed forces, who launched ‘Operation Sindoor,’ in response to the ghastly terror attacks carried out by Pakistan-based terrorists in Pahalgam, killing 26 innocent civilians, mostly Hindus, in the name of religion.
