Send Push
North India is already feeling the heat, and it’s just the beginning of April. More than 20 cities have seen temperatures shoot past 42°C, with Delhi, parts of Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan facing intense heatwave-like conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) says it’s only going to get hotter in the coming days.

Delhi saw a high of 38.2°C on Sunday, that’s 3.1 degrees above the usual for this time of year. The minimum temperature dropped to 18.5°C, which is slightly below normal. IMD has warned that Monday could feel even worse, with temperatures touching 41°C.

Humidity in the city swung between 43% and 27%. And it’s not just the heat, air quality is a growing concern too. The Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 209 on Sunday afternoon, which falls in the 'poor' category, as reported by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The IMD has predicted extreme heat across Uttar Pradesh for April, May, and June. Maximum temperatures are expected to stay above 40°C, especially in the Bundelkhand region.

Atul Kumar Singh, a weather official, said that Bundelkhand could become the hotspot for extreme heat, with cities like Jhansi and Chitrakootdham already on high alert.

Heatwave warnings across several states
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for the National capital on Monday, predicting a rise in temperatures and heatwave conditions for the next two days.

A red alert has been issued for Gujarat today, while an orange alert has been issued from April 8 to 10. The Saurashtra and Kutch regions are facing severe heat wave conditions.

According to the IMD, yesterday's highest temperature was 44°C at Kandla in the Saurashtra and Kutch regions.

Almost 21 cities across five states have recorded temperatures above 42 degrees Celsius.

"Heat wave conditions very likely in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh on 07th; Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab during 07th-10th; Delhi on 07th & 08th; West Uttar Pradesh during 07th-09th; Madhya Pradesh during 08th-10th April Hot & humid weather is likely to prevail over coastal areas of Gujarat State and Konkan & Goa during 07th-09th April," as per IMD.

IMD has predicted further heat wave conditions for 21 cities across Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Odisha.

Other states, including Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, are also likely to witness scorching heat.

The heat in Rajasthan's Barmer has set new records. Yesterday, the maximum temperature was 45.6 degrees Celsius - the highest ever in the first week of April. The departure is 6.8 degrees above normal.

An orange alert has been issued for Rajasthan for April 7 and 8, while a yellow alert has been issued for April 9 and 10. "Heat wave conditions likely over Rajasthan during 07th-10th April with severe heat wave conditions at isolated pockets during 07th-09th April," IMD added.

Heat wave conditions are expected in isolated areas of Himachal Pradesh today. Haryana and Chandigarh may see similar conditions till the 10th of this month.

Uttar Pradesh cities cross 40°C

In just the first week of April, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Hamirpur have all recorded temperatures over 40°C. Prayagraj, for example, hit 41.6°C on Saturday, 4.2 degrees higher than average.

Night-time temperatures are also expected to stay warm, meaning very little relief for residents. Fewer rainy days are expected this season, making things even tougher.

Doctors are warning people to stay safe. “Heatwaves mess with the body’s ability to stay cool, which can cause serious dehydration and health issues,” said Dr Shantanu Mishra, a GP in Lucknow.

The state government has asked hospitals to stay prepared for a rise in heat-related illnesses. Animal shelters have been told to make sure there’s enough shade and water for animals, and veterinary teams are on alert too.

Rajasthan: Record-Breaking Temperatures in Barmer

Rajasthan is also baking under the sun. Barmer broke a 26-year-old record by recording 45.6°C on Sunday. The previous high was 45.2°C back in April 1998. According to the Jaipur Met Office, this was 6.8 degrees above normal.

Other cities are facing the heat too, Jaisalmer saw 45°C, Chittorgarh 43.2°C, Jodhpur 43°C, Kota 42.4°C, and Jalore 42°C. And the heat isn’t going anywhere soon. Temperatures are expected to rise by another 3 to 4°C in parts of the state.

The IMD has said that southwestern Rajasthan could see highs of 44–45°C on Monday, while eastern parts could face 42–44°C.
