Is your hair falling out more than before? Does seeing clumps of hair in your comb scare you? If so, it could be due to more than just stress or a poor lifestyle, but rather an underlying medical condition.
Many changes in our bodies directly impact hair health. According to health expert Lima Mahajan, getting certain blood tests done before baldness occurs can help prevent this problem.
Iron and Ferritin
Iron deficiency is a major cause of hair loss. When the body lacks enough iron, cells cannot function properly, depriving hair roots of the necessary nutrition. Ferritin is a protein that stores iron in the body. Low levels of both can lead to hair thinning and rapid hair loss.
Vitamin D3
You may know that vitamin D3 is essential for bones, but it's also crucial for hair growth. A deficiency in Vitamin D3 weakens hair follicles, preventing new hair growth and causing old hair to fall out.
Vitamin B12
This vitamin helps form red blood cells, which carry oxygen and nutrients to the hair roots. Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause hair loss, as well as weaken and dull hair. Deficiency is more common in vegetarians.
Thyroid Profile (TSH, T3, T4)
The thyroid gland controls our body's metabolism. Hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism can both cause hair loss. Improper thyroid hormone balance can cause hair to become dry and brittle. Therefore, it's crucial to get TSH, T3, and T4 tests done.

Hormone Panel
Hormonal imbalance is a major cause of hair loss in both men and women. Elevated levels of the hormone DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) in men can cause baldness. This shrinks the hair follicles. Hormonal imbalances in women, such as PCOS, can also cause hair loss.
