Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a frontrunner in national water conservation efforts through large-scale rainwater harvesting and recharge programs. Supported by initiatives like Khet Talab Yojana, Amrit Sarovar, and Ganga Talab schemes, the state is strengthening water security, especially in drought-prone regions.
The administration has made rainwater harvesting mandatory in all new urban constructions, with local bodies tasked with enforcing it. Bundelkhand remains a priority zone due to a 320 mm decline in rainfall over 77 years. Here, projects like the Ken-Betwa Link and modern irrigation practices are being aggressively promoted.
India receives 870 mm average monsoon rainfall, but poor water management continues to hinder usage. Union officials stress that the water crisis stems from mismanagement rather than scarcity. Uttar Pradesh’s approach focuses on restoring traditional ponds, reviving rivers, and improving groundwater recharge.
The state ranked first in the Third National Water Awards and plans to construct 8,500 ponds under the Khet Talab Yojana. Amrit Sarovar has also seen strong implementation, with 75 ponds targeted per district.
The state's water conservation efforts have not only improved agricultural productivity but also enhanced livelihoods in rural areas. With a focus on sustainable water management, Uttar Pradesh is setting an example for other states to follow, ensuring a water-secure future for its citizens.Uttar Pradesh Leads National Water Conservation Efforts with Rainwater Harvesting and Pond RevivalUttar Pradesh Leads National Water Conservation Efforts with Rainwater Harvesting and Pond RevivalUttar Pradesh Leads National Water Conservation Efforts with Rainwater Harvesting and Pond RevivalUttar Pradesh Leads National Water Conservation Efforts with Rainwater Harvesting and Pond Revival.
