Hollywood star Benedict Cumberbatch has candidly revealed that his close friendship with Olivia Colman was nearly ruined due to the toxic nature of the characters in their new film, The Roses. The film shows the breakdown of a couple's marriage as it becomes increasingly toxic when they exact revenge on one another.
But unfortunately, it became harder for Benedict to separate art from life during certain points while filming.
Explaining that the pair hit a "speed bump" in their long-standing friendship, he told Yahoo Entertainment: "There was one speed bump where it started to get a bit toxic, and I was like, 'I might need to check in with you as a friend, because this is getting a bit nasty now."
He continued: "But after that, it was just a lot of fun insulting each other and making it up [to one another]. I can’t remember exactly what it was, but I just thought, Oh, if we’re doing a scene and having a moment together, chatting on set and doing it, and then I’m going off and doing things – I just need to clear the air and [remind myself] it’s okay, we’re good, we’re here, we’re helping each other."
The Sherlock star added: "It’s all the same as it was before the gloves started coming off. So, the short answer is it was a lot of fun, but I did — I had a blip."
However, when asked to elaborate on the same "speed bump" mentioned by Benedict, it seems Olivia had a more positive recollection of things.
The star claimed that they were still incredibly close when the director signalled that filming had wrapped as they knew it was fiction.
She told the publication: "After that, we’d just go 'aww' and we would always have a little cuddle at the end of a scene. Couldn’t get away with it in real life, I don’t think so. I might try it just to see if I can get away with it!"
The Roses is the remake of the 1989 blockbuster starring legendary stars Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas, which was titled War of the Roses.
Olivia's career has continued to grow and in 2019 she was awarded an Oscar for her role playing Queen Anne in The Favourite.
And while most actors who strive for the same recognition would place their award in an area for all to see, Olivia decided to hide her gong in a damp cupboard.
In an exclusive interview with the Mirror, she explained: "I don’t have anything out on show at home… I find it a little bit showy-offy. It was in a cupboard in our sitting room, but we’ve discovered the cupboard’s a bit damp."
She added: "We live in a very old house – the front of it is 1600 – so it’s pretty but it is a bit damp. And our lovely Darren – who’s a carpenter, handyman, painter – he opened the cupboard and went, ‘Are you f***ing kidding? "
Olivia confessed that he told her: "You know it’s damp in here?’ So he made me take it out and I’ve now got it on a bookshelf, but behind a book, so that I know it’s there and I can say ‘Hello’ to him.'”
