Willie Mullins pulled off his greatest feat when accomplishing an unprecedented The champion jumps trainer of Britain and Ireland saddled six runners in the £1 million famous contest and saw five of them finish in the first seven.
bidding to emulate Tiger Roll and Red Rum by winning the race for the second time in a row. He was given every chance to triumph by jockey Paul Townend but the 7-1 second favourite could not hold the flourish of Nick Rockett who crossed the line to win by two and a half lengths at odds of 33-1.
Grangeclare West, a third Mullins runner, was the next finisher with another McManus runner, the 13-2 favourite Iroko taking fourth. Meetingofthewaters was fifth and Minella Cocooner was seventh for Mullins with the other runner Appreciate It brought down.
Nick Rockett had been bought by Mullins for Sadie Andrew, who sadly died of terminal cancer five days after he ran fourth on his racing debut in December 2022.
In the emotional aftermath her joyous husband Stewart piggy-backed Patrick Mullins back to the winners’ enclosure after he dismounted from the winner on the track so he could be taken to the wash down area.

Andrew said: “Nick Rockett wasn’t my horse, he was my wife’s horse. She wanted a horse in training with Willie. She had her holy communion with him. We bumped into him by chance at Cheltenham Sales and she said why don't we get Willie to buy a horse, which she did.
“She’d probably been on the phone chewing Willie’s ear off to run him at Fairyhouse for my 60th birthday when he wasn't ready. We found out she had terminal cancer on 17 November 2022 and Willie ran him just to let Sadie see him. She died on December 8.”
He said Mullins had mapped out his plan for the horse on a boozy trip to last year’s Melbourne Cup.
“We were slumming it at 2am and Willie said then this is the plan, ‘We’re going to win the Thyestes, the Bobbyjo and then we’re going to give the National the craic at Aintree. What can you say? The man is a gentleman.”
, whose latest accomplishment has put him right in contention to make another late bid for the British trainers’ jumps championship and snatch the title from leader Dan Skelton, was overcome after the race.
He broke down during the interview. All he could say was, “It’s lovely to be able to give your son a ride in the National. To be able to win it is unbelievable.”
Later he said: "This is the summit for me - I don't think anything can be better than this. I never thought it would happen and here were are. It's the best day ever."
His son managed to keep his emotions in check after adding his name to the roll of honour with his father and cousins David, who won on Rule The World, and Emmet, who trained Noble Yeats.
Recapping a race that featured little incident, Patrick said: “I had too good a start and was having to take him back all the way. I was wondering at the Canal Turn had I lost too much ground, but then he just jumped fantastic.
"I got there too soon. It’s a long way from the back of the last and I had Paul Townend on my outside so
“This is everything I’ve dreamed about since I was kid. It’s a cliche but when I was five or six years old we were reading books about the National and watching black and white videos of Red Rum and the like. To put my name there is incredibly special.
“Nick Rockett is a brilliant horse. He ‘s not very big, one of the smallest in the field. He’s 50 or 60kgs lighter than the rest of our National horses but he’s brave as a lion.”
There were 16 finishers. Broadway Boy, who fell when leading the race at the Valentines fence second time round, and Celebre D’Allen were being assessed by vets out on the course.
