Period drama enthusiasts are in for a treat with a hidden gem now available for free streaming, which some viewers are hailing as a "masterpiece" and even "superior to All Creatures Great and Small."
The Hardacres, based on CL Skelton's novels, has been subtly gaining fans with its blend of family drama, social ambition, and Yorkshire tenacity. Set in the 1890s, the series follows the journey of the Hardacre family, who start off as dock workers in a harsh northern town before striking gold and attempting to infiltrate the landed gentry.
However, while they may have wealth, what they lack is acceptance - something that proves more difficult to purchase. At the heart of it all is Mary Hardacre, who yearns for recognition from the established county set but quickly realises that old money looks down on new.

Her husband Sam, more pragmatic, views wealth as an opportunity to support their former colleagues rather than pursue status.
This tension between aspiration and loyalty, pride and prejudice permeates every episode, crafting an epic yet personal drama, reports the Express.
The setting also plays a crucial role: from the hustle and bustle of the fish docks to the expansive grounds of a country estate, the contrasts are stark.
On IMDb, viewers have been swift to commend both the storyline and acting performances. One critique described it as "entertaining, well acted and very well made.
They continued: "The characters were believable and you find yourself rooting for justice... Sam Hardacre is more down to earth and wants to use his wealth to help his former work colleagues. Well worth a watch and I recommend this to any who like period dramas."
Another critic drew comparisons between the programme and Catherine Cookson's works, noting: "Wonderful period piece with layered characters and an interesting storyline...
"Showcases hardship as well as good fortune but ultimately, the triumph of family values and strong friendships."
A third proclaimed it "the best show on TV for a long time," lauding the ensemble and calling for a second series.
"A true crowd pleaser with everything you need in a good drama. Highs, lows, laughter and tears... I want more of this with the same cast and more great storylines from the Hardacre family."
The debut series of The Hardacres, launched in 2024, can be viewed on Channel 5 and Apple TV.
