New York tour bus crash kills multiple including child as passengers trapped

Multiple people, including at least one child, have died after a tour bus rolled over in a horror crash.

A tour bus crash in Pembroke, in upstate New York, crashed this afternoon (local time) and has been reported as a "mass casualty" incident. Several people are understood to have been killed in the crash with dozens injured.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash on I-90 near Pembroke, which is about 25 miles east of Buffalo. New York State Police trooper James O'Callahan said: "At this time, we have multiple fatalities, multiple entrapments and multiple injuries."

Photos taken by bystanders at the scene showed the bus had rolled over onto its side, just off the motorway. Numerous ambulances and medical helicopters were transporting patients.

At least one person has been taken to Oishei Children's Hospital in Buffalo, according to a spokesperson. The bus had been headed toward New York City following a trip to Niagara Falls. 

Police have not shared the name of the bus company. Officials said most families on board the bus were Filipino, Indian and Chinese. 

"There was glass all over the road and people's stuff all over the road," Powell Stephens of Medina told The Buffalo News after he drove past the crash. "Windows were all shattered."

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said on X/Twitter that she had been briefed on the tragedy. There was no official word on the number of people who were injured.

New York State Attorney General Letita James also commented on the tragedy on the social media platform. She said: "This bus crash is heartbreaking, and I'm praying for everyone impacted. Grateful to our first responders on the scene working to rescue and help people."

It as been reported that Erie County Medical Center, a hospital in Buffalo, said it had taken in a least eight patients by 2:10pm local time.

The Mercy Flight air medical transport service said three of its helicopters had been transporting people from the crash site. Mercy Flight president Margaret Ferrentino said: "It's a very active scene. At this time we're praying for the victims."

A long stretch of the motorway has been shut in both directions and drivers have been urged to avoid the area.
