
Bhubaneswar: The well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression on Monday, raising the likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy rain in several parts of Odisha.
In a special weather bulletin, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that well-marked low-pressure over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and north Andhra Pradesh – south Odisha coasts moved north-westwards and concentrated into a depression in the evening.
The system lay centred over northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and north Andhra Pradesh – south Odisha coasts, about 40 km south-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha) and 110 km northeast of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
It is likely to continue to move north-westwards and cross south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts close to south of Gopalpur during forenoon of August 19.
The IMD has issued a red warning for Koraput, Malkangiri and Nabarangpur districts. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur in these districts till Tuesday morning.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely at one or two places in Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati and Kandhamal. An orange has been issued for these districts.
The weather agency has also issued a yellow warning of heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph for one or two places in Ganjam, Nayagarh, Boudh, Balangir, Nuapada, Puri, Khurda and Cuttack.
