Alexander Isak will be "fuming" at Liverpool for not getting a mega-money deal done, according to Ben Foster. The wantaway Newcastle United striker's future remains up in the air at St James' Park.
Isak was absent from the Magpies' Premier League curtain-raiser at Aston Villa on Saturday, as he continues to agitate for a switch to Anfield. The 25-year-old has been working away from the Toon's main squad after he missed the club's pre-season tour of Asia.
Additionally, Isak has reportedly claimed he will not turn out for Newcastle again, though Toon boss Eddie Howe has left the door ajar for a comeback to his starting XI. Liverpool's opening offer of £110million for the player was promptly turned down and they are yet to table an enhanced proposal.
It's believed Newcastle are keen to secure new forwards before contemplating allowing Isak to depart. The Swede has been criticised by the club's supporters over his bid to engineer the move as they seemed to direct a chant of "there's only one greedy b******" at him during Saturday's stalemate at Villa Park.
And former Manchester United goalkeeper Foster believes Liverpool are partially responsible for the poisonous atmosphere. The ex-Wrexham shot-stopper suggests the reigning Premier League champions will have contributed to motivating Isak to create a disturbance through his representative.
Foster also argues that the manner Isak has managed the situation leaves the Reds as his sole alternative, having damaged his relationships on Tyneside. Speaking on the , Foster claimed: "He has to go to Liverpool, because I think that's probably the only team that will have him now.
"Isak's going to be fuming as well, because guaranteed that somebody from Liverpool has got in touch with his agent and gone, 'We want you here, hand in a transfer request or kick up a fuss and we'll sign you.' But they still haven't signed him.
"I think he just needs to take accountability for it all and he needs to come out with a statement. He needs to be open and honest with people. Liverpool are also aware that he's finished at Newcastle. They're not really going to be willing to up their offer any more."
Anthony Gordon featured as a false nine against Villa in Isak's absence, with Newcastle unable to find the net. Offensive reinforcements remain a possibility ahead of deadline day, with Brentford's Yoane Wissa under consideration.
Meanwhile, Foster believes the hostility towards Isak from Newcastle supporters will eventually push the transfer through. The former England international branded the saga as "horrible" and urged for a swift resolution.
He added: "Newcastle fans are different. This is in their blood and he's besmirched them. He's in the mud, he's done and he cannot play for Newcastle ever again, but he's got the required result.
"The club has seen that [fans chanting] at the end of the game and gone, 'We just need to get him sold.' It's a horrible way to go about it, but that's modern day football and it's the way that they go."
