A go-to for Brits could actually be posing a risk to your home and health, according to a plumbing expert. Bleach, a regular go-to for toilet cleaning, may cause hidden risks to your wellbeing, your bathroom surfaces, and your .
Dr Sarah Linwood, an environmental health specialist, and spokesperson, has uncovered the risks of using bleach-based toilet cleaners, urging Brits to switch to safer alternatives for a healthier bathroom routine. "Bleach can cause significant irritation if it comes into contact with the skin or eyes," warns Dr Linwood. She says that even small amounts can lead to chemical burns or inflammation.
The product can also cause major respiratory issues due to the toxic fumes it releases, especially in poorly ventilated spaces. "Breathing in these fumes can lead to shortness of breath, dizziness, and headaches," Dr Linwood adds.
The expert highlights that mixing bleach with other cleaners, such as ammonia, can create toxic gases that are harmful to your health.
Bleach also causes damage to your bathroom, such as corrosion to plumbing components like toilet tanks, pipes, and seals. "This damage can lead to breakdowns and expensive repairs," she says.
"Bleach can degrade bathroom surfaces like tiles, grout, and sink basins over time. The harsh chemical can break down these materials, leading to discoloration and damage."
Instead of using the cleaning agent, Dr Linwood suggests using baking soda & vinegar. This natural combination can deodorise and clean effectively without the risks associated with bleach, she explains.
"Natural cleaning alternatives can be just as effective as bleach. They're safer for both your family and your bathroom," Dr Linwood adds.
A gentler option to hydrochloric acid is citric acid, which can remove limescale without harming your health or bathroom fixtures.
A simple solution of hot water and lemon juice can also help keep toilets fresh and stain-free without harmful chemicals, according to the expert.
