It's safe to say would've been hoping for - and half expecting - a different ending on Sunday when he teed off in the final round of the Masters. Having battled hard on day three to put himself not only in contention, but also the final pairing with overnight leader , the American was being tipped as the eventual winners' closest challenger.
Instead, a miserable round of 75, which included four bogeys and one double bogey, saw the two-time US Open winner eventually slip to T5. Too many unforced errors proved costly for DeChambeau, but it was his comments after finishing that raised the most eyebrows.
DeChambeau appeared to be unhappy when he revealed that Masters-chasing . However, Padraig Harrington, who won the Ryder Cup four times with Team Europe, laughed off DeChambeau's criticism.
Speaking on the , the Dublin-born star said: "Bryson's change of personality on number three, the oddest thing ever him laying up. He just wasn't there for the rest of the day. He didn't want to be the player he was at Pinehurst [in the 2024 U.S. Open], he wanted to be a clever golfer. It was an incredible change of personality, he was out of it.
"As well, Bryson coming up with this afterwards 'He [McIlroy] didn't talk to me'. Who does Bryson want to be? Can you imagine going out on a football pitch and saying the guy marking me 'he wasn't chatting me, he wasn't nice to me'?"
Harrington concluded, giggling through his response: "That was a weird one with Bryson. Clearly he was off his game, but his ego, he was chasing something that he isn't."
In the end, it was the resilient Justin Rose who pushed McIlroy the furthest, with the Englishman finishing as the Masters runner-up for a third time in his career. By contrast, Rose, who is a former US Open winner himself, spoke glowingly of McIlroy's achievement during his post-round debrief.
Rose, who might've otherwise been one of the thousands making up a crowded scene surrounding the 18th cup had he not been involved in the playoff, said: "Yeah, it hurts. What are you going to do about it, though? Listen, [I told McIlroy] 'I was glad I was here on this green to witness you win the career grand slam.' We saw part of history today. It's a momentous day in golf."
