When it comes to getting rid of aphids, you may have tried expensive, chemical-filled insecticides, but there's a simple, affordable solution already in your kitchen cupboard. Washing-up liquid, costing less than a mere pound, is proving to be a highly effective and eco-friendly way to control aphid infestations. Aphids are tiny sap-sucking pests that can cause significant damage to your plants or even transmit plant viruses, leaving your beloved plants weak and vulnerable.
According to Gardeners' World, there are actually more than 500 species of aphid in the UK, varying in colour from green and black to yellow, brown, and orange. While many gardeners reach for commercial insecticides, these often contain harsh chemicals that can actually harm beneficial insects and the environment.

It turns out washing-up liquid can be a lifesaver as a simple, gentle alternative that targets aphids without damaging your garden's delicate ecosystem.
According to pest control specialists at Hamptons Pest Control, a mixture of mild washing-up liquid and water is a highly effective and eco-friendly way to tackle aphids quickly without harming your plants or other beneficial insects.
All you need is to dilute 1-2 teaspoons of mild washing-up liquid in a litre of water.
Sprayed directly onto the affected plants, this soapy solution breaks down the waxy coating on aphids' bodies, suffocating them almost instantly.
To minimise any potential harm to your plants, it's best to use only eco-friendly detergents and apply a weak solution, as recommended by experts at Gardeners' World.
One Reddit user also recommended using washing-up liquid and wrote: "A weak solution of washing up liquid and water can kill aphids on contact when sprayed directly on the plant.
"The general consensus is to use a teaspoon of washing up liquid diluted in three liters of water. The soap in the washing up liquid suffocates the aphids, causing them to lose their grip on the stem and fall off."
Someone else commented: "I second washing up liquid. Last year I had a horrendous aphid issue on my pepper plants, and as they were still relatively small I washed the entire plant.
"I took it out it's pot, (gently) hosed the soil off the roots and plonked the whole thing in a bucket of soapy water. Once they were aphid free I potted them up as if nothing had happened. Yes, they shocked for a few days but after a week they were back to normal and no more aphids."
Another Reddit user added: "I tried everything, and nothing worked until I used Fairy Liquid and water. Shook it up, gave the garlic chives a good squirt and have not seen an aphid since."
