Gary Lineker has revealed that once his stint with concludes, he doesn't envisage much television work in his future. The and England icon is set to hang up his presenting boots on the Premier League highlights show at season's end.
The 64-year-old will still spearhead the BBC's live FA Cup football coverage and the 2026 World Cup across Mexico, Canada, and the USA before The revered striker, who clinched the Golden Boot at the 1986 World Cup, took over from Des Lynam in 1999 and has become synonymous with the show for 26 years. Lineker has, however, confessed a preference for enjoying football and other sports from the solace of his own home instead of a TV studio. He's also found success off-screen as a co-founder of media company Goalhanger, which has made waves in the world of podcasting. Lineker, who hosts 'The Rest is Football' podcast primarily with and Micah Richards, oversees a range of podcasts including 'The Rest is History' and 'Empire'. His focus seems set to shift towards growing his media venture rather than continuing in television.
During an appearance on , snooker ace Stephen Hendry asked Lineker where in the media sphere he will be working. Lineker replied: "Podcasts really.
"We've got a podcast, a 'Podcast empire' we like to call it. But, I mean, it's amazing. So, I'm definitely focused on that now.
"Unless something (comes up) I really don't envisage me doing TV much. Maybe, you know, occasional appearances on something, but not (what he was doing before)."
When asked if he will continue enjoying sports from his sofa, the former England striker, who notched up 48 goals in 80 appearances for the national team, said: "Oh yeah, I love watching football. I find it much nicer watching football at home in the studio. I love watching it. I love the sport, I love watching lots of sports.
"I watch a lot of snooker and I watch a lot of golf. This time of year is the best period for sport: the finale of the football season, the start of cricket, the snooker World Championship and the Masters."
Lineker will hand over his Match of the Day presenting baton to a trio of broadcasters. The line-up includes seasoned BBC host Mark Chapman, accomplished presenter and ex-gymnast Gabby Logan, and Sky Sports anchor Kelly Cates, all stepping into Lineker's role.
Discussing his departure on the Rest is Football podcast in November, Lineker said: "It felt like the right time. It came at a point really where the BBC and Match of the Day, they've got the rights for another three years, the cycle starts from next season. So it felt like if I just do one more year, it would be a bit weird.
"So I think to get a different presenter in place, I think would be probably wise on not just for me, but certainly for the BBC as well. But I really wanted to finish on a major tournament, do the FA Cup as well. So you've not quite got rid of me just yet."
