My go-to method of drying laundry is always to hang it outside on the washing line; however, the wet weather at this time of year makes it impossible. Drying clothes indoors is always a challenge, even when using one of the best clothes airers; it can still be tricky. Drying clothes fast can be a struggle, let alone bed sheets, which take up so much valuable space when hanging out to dry.
While I do have a tumble dryer, I'm trying to cut energy bill costs where possible, especially since the energy price cap rose by 2% in October and by 2% since July. Instead, I love to use one device Mr Hinch fans constantly rave about - a dehumidifier. However, there is a way to use them properly to dry your bedding quickly while also drying a few other laundry items at the same time.
For me, speeding up the drying process of bedding starts with your washing machine. I always put wash loads on a spin and drain cycle. This will remove any excess moisture, making a big difference in how quickly your sheets dry.
An additional spin can remove up to 30% more moisture from your bed sheets, and it only takes 10 minutes.
Once the cycle is over, I quickly remove the bed sheets and the rest of my laundry from the washing machine. This helps prevent bacteria and musty odours from forming.
The next step is to hang up the bedding on an airer, but before doing so, I give each laundry item a shake. This simple action helps separate the fabric fibres, allowing better air circulation.
Shaking also prevents sheets from clumping together, which can create damp pockets that take much longer to dry. It's a quick trick that can significantly reduce overall drying time.
As I was washing clothes and towels simultaneously, I loaded the airer with those items first, making sure to spread them out evenly.
When it comes to the bed sheet and duvet cover, I make sure to drape the bed sheet over one half of the airer and the duvet cover over the entire airer. This is the must-do step to trap the humid air inside and allow the dry air from the dehumidifier to be pumped into the space created by the sheet.
Dehumidifiers reduce the level of humidity by sucking in air from the room, removing the moisture, and then blowing the warm, dry air back into the room again.
I always position the dehumidifier to the side of the airer and close by, so it can reach all the laundry items.
After an hour, I checked on the laundry items, the bed sheet and duvet cover had already fully dried. The clothes and towels were still damp and required an extra three hours to fully dry.
While dehumidifiers don't work faster than tumble dryers, the amount of money they save you on energy bills definitely outweighs this, and one hour is still quick. My dehumidifier only sets me back 8p an hour.
