Rory McIlroy's caddie Harry Diamond will have significantly swelled his bank balance after the Northern Irish star's . McIlroy claimed his fifth major, and became just the sixth man to achieve a career grand slam, when he clinched the after a tense play-off against .
The 35-year-old will have pocketed an astonishing $4.2million (£3,191,756) for his troubles. However, Diamond will have also seen a sum of McIlroy's bounty. He is reported to already have a net worth in the realm of £1.9m, and is known as one of the PGA Tour's . He can now expect to earn an extra £319,175, with the winning caddie taking home a cool 10 per cent of the overall prize money. Last year, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler won a second green jacket and claimed a slightly lower amount of $3.6m (£2.7m). That meant that his caddie, Ted Scott, earned $360,000 (£273,036). The average caddie on tour can expect to pick up a weekly wage of around £1,520.
However, for a player like McIlroy, who is reportedly worth around £170m and is only the second-ever player after Tiger Woods to rack up $100m (£75m) in prize money on the PGA Tour, Diamond is likely to be compensated to reflect such earnings.
Regardless of any financial rewards, the Masters victory represents a huge milestone for Diamond, who had been on the receiving end of repetitive criticism. He and McIlroy grew up together in Holywood, County Down, and have been friends since their junior days at Holywood Golf Club.
Diamond began looping for the star when McIlroy split with JP Fitzgerald in 2017 after eight years and four majors together. However, the partnership between the pair had been slammed by various pundits and former pros as a potential reason why McIlroy hadn't claimed a major since 2014, with some naysayers claiming Diamond was too subservient to him on the course.
Yet any criticism will now surely dissipate. McIlroy has often spoken out in defence of his childhood friend and caddie on multiple occasions, and after claiming the Masters, the 35-year-old was full of praise for Diamond as he emotionally paid tribute to his caddie.
"To be able to share this with him after all the close calls that we've had, all the [nonsense] that he's had to take from people that don't know anything about the game, yeah, this one is just as much his as it is mine. He's a massive part of what I do, and I couldn't think of anyone better to share it with than him," McIlroy said.
He also revealed how Diamond settled his nerves and helped him refocus ahead of the critical play-off against Rose, adding: "Harry and I were walking to the golf cart to bring us back to the 18th tee, and he said to me, 'Well pal, we would have taken this on Monday morning'. I'm like, 'Yeah, absolutely we would have'. That was an easy reset."
