MANGALURU: A woman from Belthangady was reportedly found dead in the campus of a private university in Punjab on Saturday. The victim is Akanksha, 22.
Her parents, Surendra, a contractor, and Sindhudevi, from Boliyar in Dharmasthala, left Mangaluru for Punjab on Sunday morning.
According to sources, the incident took place on a campus in Phagwara. Akanksha completed her aerospace engineering course about six months ago and secured a job in a private firm in Delhi recently. It is learnt that on May 16, she travelled from Delhi to Punjab to collect her graduation certificate.
However, due to delays in getting the certificate, she was informed that she would need to stay for an extra day.
Akanksha regularly updated her parents about her travel plans. But on Saturday at around 4:30 PM, her parents received an unexpected call from the Punjab police, informing them that their daughter committed suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of the college building. According to her family, Akanksha was a cheerful, confident girl who showed no signs of depression.
The family has appealed to both the Karnataka and Punjab govts, demanding a thorough, fair, and transparent investigation into the incident. Her parents also met Belthangady MLA Harish Poonja.
Upon learning about the incident, Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta said that he spoke to the concerned Senior Superintendent of Police.
The family reached Delhi, from there travelled to Amritsar, and once they reach the concerned police station, the formalities will be completed and the body would be handed over to the family, he said.
