Retired Indian Air Force officer Wing Commander LK Dutta, father of Bollywood actress Lara Dutta, has passed away in Mumbai at the age of 84. The news was met with condolences as Lara Dutta, accompanied by her husband Mahesh Bhupathi, attended the funeral services to honor his memory during the final rites. The family has not yet disclosed the cause of his passing nor made any public statements regarding their loss.
A distinguished military career and personal life
LK Dutta was a highly respected figure who served with distinction in the Indian Air Force. He embarked on his military journey at a young age, joining the National Defense Academy (NDA), and subsequently became a proficient helicopter pilot. His commitment to the nation was evident through his courageous participation in three significant wars: in 1965, 1969, and 1971.
Tragically, his flying career was cut short at the age of 41 when he suffered a heart attack, which grounded him for life. Despite not having a conventional university education due to his early military enlistment, he demonstrated remarkable strength and dignity in adapting to civilian life, raising and supporting his family through various challenges. A notable highlight of his career was serving as the personal pilot to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, a fact Lara Dutta herself confirmed in interviews, noting its influence on her portrayal of Indira Gandhi in the film ‘Bell Bottom’.
Dutta was married to Jennifer Dutta, who is of Anglo-Indian descent. Lara has often spoken about her multicultural upbringing, with her father being Punjabi and her mother Anglo-Indian. The family eventually settled in Bengaluru, where Lara completed her schooling. In a past appearance on the YouTube show ‘Tellis Like It Is’, Lara fondly recalled her deep bond with her father, emphasizing that flying was his ultimate passion in life.
Lara Dutta's upcoming projects
On the professional front, Lara Dutta is set to appear in the highly anticipated film ‘Welcome to the Jungle’. This project will reunite her with actor Akshay Kumar, following their last collaboration in the 2021 thriller ‘Bell Bottom’. Directed by Ahmed Khan, the film is expected to feature a star-studded ensemble cast.
