Social media users and industry insiders recently shared differing opinions on influencers walking the red carpet at Cannes 2025, with some of the remarks turning into sharp criticism regarding the quality of their work. Now, actor and comedian Vir Das has stepped in to challenge what he perceives as double standards within the film fraternity. Das questioned the legitimacy of the outrage directed at influencers and highlighted the irony of the situation.

Vir took to his Instagram account to address the matter with a lengthy note: “Look. I work largely with new, unknown designers. So I understand the appeal and attention that a red carpet brings. I also respect the hustle it takes to get yourself there. It’s not for me, but I can respect that underdog energy. So, all that being said… Can I just say—‘film’ people who are upset with influencers at Cannes need to stop appearing on their podcasts and doing collaborations to promote their films,” he wrote.

He further continued:“The feeling you get when you see them walk down the carpet in your domain is the same feeling we get listening to your lame story about how you gave up sugar—in their domain. Consider the possibility that they may not be as well-dressed or as good-looking as you, but they might just be more interesting. Cannot believe I’m defending influencers, but the elitism is off the charts.”
