Mumbai Indians will have the full squad at their disposal for the first time this season, when they host Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday. The return of Jasprit Bumrah should prove the biggest boost for them. Bumrah joined the squad on Saturday night, with head Coach Mahela Jayawardene confirming that he will be ‘available for selection’.
“He’s training today, so he should be available for tomorrow. He arrived last night, and I believe he has had his sessions at the CoE (Centre of Excellence) to finalise that. He’s been handed over to our physios. (If) all good, he’ll play tomorrow,” said Jayawardene on Sunday.

On Sunday, Bumrah bowled at full tilt in the nets for close to 30 minutes and a lot of those deliveries were bowled to Rohit Sharma who is fit too. While he looks raring to go, MI will have to be judicious with how they use the right-arm pacer. With the five-Test series in England coming right after the IPL, the Indian team think-tank will also keep a keen eye on his workload.
“Boom’s coming back from a pretty long layoff, so we need to give him that space and not expect too much. But knowing Jasprit, he will be up for it. We’re very happy to have him in the camp, the experience he brings, that extra voice out there in the middle, chatting with Boulty (Trent Boult), chatting with Deepak (Chahar) or any other younger bowler, giving that advice is also valuable for us. That’s what we’re looking forward to from him,” said Jayawardene.
The Sri Lankan also sounded positive about Rohit Sharma returning to the squad. The former MI captain had to sit out from the last match against Lucknow Super Giants due to a knee niggle.
Bumrah had last taken the field during the Sydney Test in the first week of 2025, during which he suffered a back injury. Since then, the pace spearhead has spent most of his time recovering at the CoE having missed the white ball series against England and the Champions Trophy.
MI will hope that Bumrah will hit the ground running as the bowling unit has struggled to land those telling blows. Only in the clash against Kolkata Knight Riders—their first home match—did the bowlers look lethal on a helpful track. It remains MI’s sole win in the tournament. In the other three games, they have conceded in excess of 60 in the Powerplay.
They failed to ace the Powerplays during batting as well, losing too many wickets that put pressure on the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya . Only once did they score 60-plus runs and that came in the last match against LSG, but in that clash as well, they lost two wickets.
