SHIVAMOGGA/CHIKKAMAGALURU: Two tourists from Karnataka - Shivamogga realtor Manjunatha Rao and Bengaluru's Bharat Bhushan - are among the dead in the Pahalgam massacre.
Rao's first-ever family trip outside of Karnataka ended in tragedy when terrorists shot him dead in a chilling strike when they were holidaying in Kashmir's popular tourist destination on Tuesday. The 46-year-old was in the Valley along with wife Pallavi and son Abhijit Rao.
After a lone bullet killed her husband, Pallavi, speaking to a television news channel, said she pleaded with the terrorists to similarly gun down her and son, too. According to Pallavi, the terrorists told her: "Go tell Modi."
The realtor from Shivamogga's Vijayanagar had planned dream vacation following completion of his son's plus-two examinations.
The Raos had booked the trip through a travel agency and were travelling with a few tourists from Sagar taluk of Shivamogga district. The team left Shivamogga on April 19 and was to return on April 24.
Shivamogga was home to Rao's family for 2 decades
The family, from Kunimakki village in Koppa taluk of Chikkamagaluru district, had made Shivamogga their home for two decades. Rao's father had served as manager at Shivamogga Malnad Areca Marketing Co-operative Society (Mamcos) head office. While Rao had become a realtor, wife Pallavi works as Birur branch manager of Mamcos in Chikkamagaluru district.
A neighbour described Rao as soft-spoken. Rao lost his father many years ago and his mother Sumathi, 80, is currently staying in a relative's house and has not been informed of the tragedy. Rao's sister Roopa resides in Thirthahalli, Shivamogga.
Mamcos managing director Srikanth Baruve spoke to Pallavi over phone following the incident. Shivamogga MP BY Raghavendra said Rao's body would be brought to Shivamogga on Wednesday.
