The Oval Office meeting between Donald Trump and El Salvador president Nayib Bukele involved a lot of criminals and also the Maryland father who was mistakenly sent to El Salvador along with the Tren de Aragua prisoners owing to an administrative error. The Supreme Court has ordered that Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia has to be returned to the US but Monday's meeting between Trump and Bukele made it clear that no one is concerned about that. In fact, Trump wants to send US prisoners to El Salvador if the law permits.
El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), located in Tecoluca, is a massive, high-security prison designed to house the country’s most dangerous criminals, including gang members and those accused of terrorism. Opened in January 2023, it’s the largest prison in the Americas, with a capacity for up to 40,000 inmates. Built under Bukele, CECOT has become a cornerstone of his strategy to curb violence in a country once known as the "murder capital of the world." Its stark, fortress-like design—complete with multiple electric fences, 19 watchtowers, and over 1,000 armed guards—reflects its purpose: total control and isolation.
A video is doing the rounds on social media platforms where Trump was asking Bukele to build more places like CECOT to house homegrown criminals . It was caught on camera but Trump left no room for speculation as he raised the issue during the joint press conference as well.
Trump said he is open to the idea of sending American citizens convicted of violent crimes to El Salvador prison . "I'd like to go a step further. I said to Pam (Pam Bondi), I don't know what the laws are, we always have to obey the laws, but we also have homegrown criminals that push people into subways ... I'd like to include them in the group of people to get them out of the country," Trump said.
