Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was seriously injured in a car accident in New Hampshire on Saturday night and is currently hospitalized with multiple injuries, his spokesperson confirmed.
According to the New York Post, Giuliani, 81, sustained a fractured vertebrae, cuts and bruises on his left arm and lower leg after his rental car was struck from behind at high speed.
“Mayor Giuliani was flagged down by a woman who was a victim of domestic violence prior to the accident. He rendered assistance and contacted 911, remaining on scene until responding officers arrived to ensure her safety,” said Michael Ragusa, Giuliani’s head of security.
“The accident occurred after he re-entered his vehicle, which was then hit from behind at high speed.”
Ragusa added that Giuliani, who served as New York mayor from 1994 to 2001, “is in great spirits” despite the injuries. “He’s a beast. He survived 9/11,” he said.
Giuliani is expected to remain at a Manchester-area hospital for two to three days, where doctors have advised him to wear a brace for the fractured vertebrae. His business partner, Maria Ryan = a nurse practitioner - is helping oversee his care.
“He’s getting further tests and stabilization of his injuries,” Ryan told the New York Post.
