A court in Bangladesh issued arrest warrants for ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, British MP Tulip Rizwana Siddiq, and 50 others in connection with the alleged illegal acquisition of land through abuse of political power.
Siddiq, who is Rehana’s daughter and Hasina’s niece, is accused of unlawfully acquiring a plot of land from her aunt.
Bangladeshi media report that the warrant, which named 53 individuals linked to Hasina, followed a broader investigation into alleged corruption by her inner circle. There is no formal extradition treaty between the UK and Bangladesh, making it unclear how the court’s decision will be enforced.
Meanwhile, Siddiq, the Labour MP for Hampstead and Highgate, has strongly denied the accusations, describing them as part of a "targeted and baseless" campaign, The Guardian reported.
Who is Tulip Siddiq ?
Tulip Siddiq has served as a Labour MP since 2015, representing first Hampstead and Kilburn and then Hampstead and Highgate. Born into a politically prominent Bangladeshi family, she is the daughter of Sheikh Rehana and the niece of Bangladesh's former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Her maternal grandfather was Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s founding president, who was assassinated during a military coup in 1975.
Siddiq's parents settled in the UK, and she was raised in Hampstead. She described her upbringing as rooted in multicultural Britain, surrounded by the local Jewish community. Her early life was shaped by political exposure meeting figures like Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, and Mother Teresa.
She joined the Labour Party at 16, motivated in part by her father’s disability and the support he received from the NHS. Before entering Parliament, she worked with Amnesty International, Save the Children, and the Greater London Authority, BBC reported.
Siddiq was elected to Camden council before winning a seat in Parliament in 2015. She has since been re-elected in 2017, 2019, and 2024 with increasing majorities.
Despite her steady rise in British politics, Siddiq has not been free of controversy. She faced criticism for her perceived closeness to her aunt’s authoritarian regime in Bangladesh. In 2017, during a heated TV interview about this, she was accused of intimidating a pregnant producer and later apologised.
In her personal life, she married in 2013 and has two children. She made headlines in 2019 for attending Parliament in a wheelchair two days before giving birth, casting a crucial vote on Brexit. Following that, she became the first MP to vote by proxy under new rules.
