Assam: Contraband worth Rs 15 cr seized; 2 arrested

Two persons were arrested and narcotics worth Rs 15 crore seized from them in two separate operations in Assam.

The first arrest was made in Morigaon district, while the other operation was carried out in South Salmara.

Police said that a 25-year-old woman, hailing from Manipur, was arrested near Jagiroad railway station in Morigaon.

“She reached Jagiroad this morning by a bus from Manipur and was found loitering near the railway station when she was apprehended based on suspicion,” he said.

Police seized 104.5 gm of heroin, concealed in nine soap boxes, strapped to her body.

“The seized heroin is estimated to be worth around Rs 5 crore,” the officer said, adding that an investigation is underway to find out if any larger network is involved.

In the other operation under Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, banned Yaba tablets were recovered, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a post on X.

“In a major breakthrough against drug trafficking, @SSalmaraPolice conducted special anti-NDPS operation and seized 50,000 Yaba tablets, 1 mobile phone,” he said.

Sarma said the tablets are estimated to be worth Rs 10 crore and a peddler was arrested in the operation.

“No mercy, No Escape!” the chief minister asserted.

Yaba tablets are illegal in India as it contains methamphetamine, a Schedule II substance under the Controlled Substances Act.
