Chandigarh, India — Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane has openly taken responsibility for the team’s crushing defeat to Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Tuesday night in the IPL 2025 season. Chasing a modest target of 112 runs, KKR collapsed for just 95 in 15.1 overs, handing PBKS a 16-run victory.
Ajinkya Rahane “We Batted Poorly as a Unit” Rahane’s Honest AdmissionSpeaking at the post-match presentation, a visibly dejected Rahane admitted that the team failed collectively with the bat. “Everyone saw what happened. I’m very disappointed. As captain, I take responsibility. I played a poor shot, and even though the ball may have missed, that’s where it all started. We simply batted very poorly as a unit,” he said.
Rahane also highlighted that despite a strong bowling performance which restricted Punjab Kings to 111, the batting effort did not live up to the expectations. He acknowledged the simplicity of the chase and blamed poor shot selection and lack of awareness for the loss.
Chahal Rips Through KKR Line-Up as Collapse EnsuesKKR seemed to be gaining momentum with a 55-run partnership between Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi (37 off 28). However, Rahane’s dismissal turned the tide. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal wreaked havoc, claiming 4 wickets, triggering a stunning collapse that saw 7 wickets fall for just 23 runs.
Rahane also explained his decision not to use the DRS (Decision Review System) for his own dismissal, citing poor communication between batters. “I didn’t want to burn a review unnecessarily. There was confusion. But no excuses. We lost the game with our batting,” he added.
“T20 Is Not Just About Big Shots” A Tactical MessageIn a message to modern-day batters, Rahane emphasized the need for situational awareness over flashy strokeplay. “T20 is not only about hitting sixes and looking good. We should have rotated strike. The pitch wasn’t flat, and bowlers were getting some help. We lacked patience and game sense,” he noted.
Despite the setback, Rahane remained optimistic. “There’s still half the tournament to go. We’re confident and will bounce back. Right now, my mind is full of thoughts, but once I’m in the dressing room, I’ll gather myself and speak to the team,” he concluded.
